Stars Announces Rules Structure for New TaG Class PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 March 2008

The Snap-on Stars of Karting announced today the basis for a set of regulations for the Series' new TaG class. This latest iteration of rules in this critical category is aimed at proper parity and bringing the focus back to the driver and the sport.

The Stars TaG rules contain two important changes:

  • All non-rev-limited ignitions will be required to run a maximum gear ratio, to be determined at each track with the intent of setting an approximate maximum operating range of 17,000rpm.
  • The Vortex RoK TT rules package is re-released same as before with the following changes:
    • Squish 1.40 minimum.  Must have 0,2mm minimum head gasket.
    • Flex length 395mm minimum.
    • Standard flat bottom airbox cup is required.
    • Ignition timing set to 17 degrees (.059inch) maximum BTDC

Scott G Evans, Stars national technical director stated, "This is the culmination of an intense and broad ranging effort to find the truth behind the hype in this critical category.  I have to thank Paul Zalud for his willingness to bear the brunt of expenses as we employed trusted industry leaders like Doug Fleming as project advisor, Josh Huff of Eagle One Motorsports as dyno operator and Daniel Patino from G-Phactory as tuner/mechanic. In three separate occasions over the last few weeks we got together and made over forty dynamometer runs, with our results backed up with a full day of track testing with Cory Pollock at the wheel.  The presence of Genesis Racing at the tests is notable and we thank them for their input."

Various methods of restriction were tested on the Vortex engine after the first dyno test revealed a power advantage over the class standard Parilla Leopard.  Special restrictors and different reeds with stiffeners were manufactured and tested individually and in combination.  Multiple gasket configurations were applied and tested.  Baseline and modified horsepower plots were made with both prepared engines as well as box stock units to validate the results.  Mechanical verification of settings and limits were applied at every step.

Evans noted, "Some of the methods came with side effects like increased operating temperatures, increased costs to the end-user or necessitated special components supply.  We weeded those out and applied a cost-effective package that will be easy to assimilate and accomplishes the goal.  The resulting package gave us a nice broadening and relocation of the Vortex power band that matches well with the Leopard.  The application should increase reliability in both of the packages and bring the focus of the category back to the track.

Series President Paul Zalud also wanted to thank all the people involved in this critical process and their willingness to take the time out of their busy days to help us with the formation of the Stars TaG rules package. "This was not an easy task in such a short time. We will not put forth a set of criteria without the proper investigation and without a proven set of acceptable results. People look to us as the industry leader.  With this comes a level of responsibility that once again we will provide in order to move forward with this exceedingly important segment of our market. For us there are no rules that we can borrow or a 'theory' that can simply be applied. We have to formulate them ourselves and we have to back it up.  Scott and the team he assembled did just that."

The Snap-on Stars of Karting will kick off April 4 - 6 in Ocala, FL at the Ocala Gran Prix circuit.  Those wishing to learn more about the Snap-on Stars of Karting can go to www.starsofkarting.com.  All technical inquiries can be directed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   All promotional inquiries can be directed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
