David Jurca, 22, Federal Way, Wash. won the second round of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup in his Redapt/Serengeti Design sponsored clean diesel Jetta with a strong race at a cold and wet Mosport International Raceway. Hometown racer Chris Holman, 20, Burlington, Ontario came in second, and rounding out the top three was Jimmy Underhill, 21, Denver, Colo.
After finishing fourth in the first round of the VW Jetta TDI Cup in Virginia, was hoping to improve on that position and stay in the fight for the championship lead. By winning the race in Mosport, he not only improved his position in the championship, but took the outright lead heading into Portland, Oregon, a local Northwest race for the Federal Way, Wash resident.
"Coming into this race I felt really confident with a strong second in practice and third in qualifying based on lap times," said Jurca. "Unfortunately, I got a penalty for the last race in Virginia for avoidable contact. I sincerely felt the contact was not a result of my actions and an unjust penalty was served. Nonetheless, it dropped me four positions for the start of the race. Starting in seventh, my biggest worry was getting through the first turn because I knew something might happen with the slick conditions. It ended up happening right in front of me and I must have been just inches away from really being involved. I was actually the first car through and am so lucky to have not been involved in the crash. Once the incident was clear, I worked my way up and made the pass for the lead and just tried to keep it smart and stay out of trouble. It was really difficult in the rain with slick tires. To come back from the penalty and win really means something to me. This will serve as great momentum heading into Portland."
"Volkswagen has really put together a strong clean diesel series and I can't thank them enough. I also want to thank the companies who have made this possible for me in 2008. They include Redapt, Serengeti Design, Pignataro Volkswagen, Oakley, and Washington Cedar and Supply."
In the end, the winner of the race series will be awarded $100,000 from Volkswagen to aid them in their next steps as a professional racer. An additional $150,000 will be given to the winner if he or she signs a contract with a professional level team within six months of winning the Jetta TDI Cup series.
All drivers in this innovative race participated using factory prepared and managed 2009 Jetta TDI clean-diesel vehicles powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI engine. The Jetta TDI is lightly modified from spec, featuring race-ready suspension and brakes, and a six-speed double-clutch automatic DSG transmission. Additionally, to highlight its environmental dedication Volkswagen has partnered with Carbonfund.org to certify the entire race series as carbon free.
The next race in the series will take place on July 27 - 28 at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon. The Jetta TDI Cup series, the first all clean-diesel race series, is sanctioned by the SCCA Pro Racing, Inc. and Volkswagen of America, Inc.
